Type: Sports Bar
Class: Average
Dante’s is a well known college hangout and you can tell. From the outside it appears to be a dingy little building with a large Dante’s sign. When you walk you, you are immediately assaulted by the music, smoke, smells from the kitchen mixed with the slight smell of stale beer. The décor here is a mishmash of styles and types. There is a brick and there is wood. There is a small dark lounge, a dim upstairs for darts and games, a well lit game area down stairs, a large pool area down and to the back with couches, and finally a small crowded bar. The overall style was “old-world pub” but that is generic at best.
Dante’s has the most comprehensive set of sports games I have seen anywhere in the city. It has Foosball, air hockey, pool, darts, golf video games, some a pinball, a fishing game (I think), a racing game or two, and finally a hoops machine. I am going to have to come back here, if only to play some air hockey. I have never been any good foosball but I know people out there who love it.
We wanted to talk to our attractive bartender Rhiannon, but she was just busy enough that it was hard to get her to spend any time on us. We did finally pawn a card off on her and she interested, if too busy to really chat about it.
The crowd was distinctly college oriented, but there were some older people hanging out in the lounge watching the game and watching the crowd. In the background Rage against the Machine played followed by Tom Jones. What is it with Tom Jones following us around? Maybe I am the only one who is noticing it, or perhaps I just imagining things.
The drinks were average in strength (maybe) and not terrible tasty. I couldn’t figure why G&T tasted so questionable, but I am fairly sure that there was not enough Gin in there to counter out the foul flavor of the Tonic. The drinks were priced at $3.75 and that seemed about right for a college bar.
Owing primarily to its large assortment of amusements I am giving Dante’s 2 and a half Martini Glasses out of 5 rather than they typical panning for weak assed drinks that it should deserve.
