From the first moment that you walk up to Barça (pronounced Barsa), you can tell that this place is something special. Standing outside you are confronted with two large, imposing wooden doors. Now when I say large, I mean 9’ high and probably 5’ diameter doors. They have huge black metal ring handles and you have to heave the doors open. There are no graceful entrances, short of having a lackey open the doors for you.
The Barça has two floors and an extremely spacious bar. The entire place is done up in a sleek looking yuppie style that attracts attractive people. I like both of those things. The drinks have a strong pour and are priced at the expected price of $4. I am told that they even used Gordon’s Gin for my well G&T. It is at least one step up from the bottom.
The ground floor has a number of large plush spacious booths, high tables with high chairs, lots of space to sit or lean at the bar and a front seating area. I have never managed to score one of the front seating areas, but one of these days, I am going to get to Barça early enough and then squat there all night with my friends.
Upstairs there is a small private “deck” which is littered with tables and provides couples and small groups a little privacy. In addition, the balcony that overlooks the bar proper allows you to scope out where all of the fine women are before you make your move.
Barça does not have anything in the way of entertainments other than some soft music, good drinks, and lots of eye candy. The crowd here is primarily young, a good mix of straight and gay, and everyone is dressed well. Sure, you could come here in jeans and a t-shirt but expect to feel severely underdressed.
Barça is the quintessential yuppie Cap Hill bar and as such it deserves its 4 and a half Martini Glasses out of 5.
