For bar 69, we decided that we wanted a place that would fit the bill. It had to a be place that was a little bit bad, a little bit dirty, and was somewhere, where you felt like sin was truly possible. Fortunately, the Bad JuJu Lounge fits the bill quite nicely.
The bar is done up with a leaning towards a hell feel. The lighting is dim with slight red tint. Lining the topmost portions of the bar are glass or plastic flames that rise into the air, giving it a slight demonic feel. The wall decorations are made of dark sheet metal and have various designs cut into them. There were thinks like flames and bats and what not, but I wasn’t really paying attention. The tables were covered with then sheets of metal and had bronze studs anchoring them down, giving the tables a nice texture and a cold feel.
I am told that drinks were about $3.50, but since Wolf, Sponsor Extraordinaire, picked up the tab, I don’t really know. The drink was good and had a nice pour. In the background they were playing rock/alternative but it was not so loud that we had to yell (although it was a little hard to hear.)
The crowd here is young and a bit grungier than you will find at a place like Barca or the Deluxe. It is a great place to come and hang with some friends and you can even occasionally meet people. It is especially cool, if you can grab the lounge area up front with the couches and chairs. This area provides you with a comfortable place to sit and view of the street as the Goths and yuppies walk by to the Vogue and Barca respectively.
I like the Bad JuJu Lounge, but you will find the bartenders have the general Capitol Hill Stand offishness, so don’t expect them to chat. As such I give the place 3 and a half Martini Glasses out of 5.
